The college operates under the general authority of the State Board of Education (SBE), as defined in the Constitution of the State of Florida. The powers and duties of the SBE and the Department of Education (DOE) are defined in Florida Statute.
State Board of Education: The SBE is the chief implementing and coordinating body of public education in Florida that focuses upon high-level policy decisions. It has authority to adopt rules and implement provisions of law for the improvement of the K-20 public education system, except for the State University System.
Commissioner of Education: The commissioner of education is the chief educational officer of the state and is responsible for giving full assistance to the SBE in implementing state wide educational efforts.
The Department of Education: The DOE acts as an administrative and supervisory agency under the direction of the SBE. The Division of Florida Colleges is a unit within the DOE.
Division of Florida Colleges: The Division of Florida Colleges is assigned such powers, duties, responsibilities, and functions as shall be necessary to ensure the greatest possible coordination, efficiency, and effectiveness of colleges as defined in Florida statutes. The division, by action of Florida Legislature, is given broad supervisory and policy recommendation responsibilities in relation to the Florida College System. The division works with colleges and serves in a liaison capacity that allows the colleges to relate to divisions and departments within the state government.
Chancellor of the Florida College System: The chancellor of the Florida College System establishes and maintains optimal efficiency of the Division of Florida Colleges. The chancellor works with the Florida College System presidents to focus on the educational needs of the communities and students they serve. The chancellor is an ex-officio member of the Council of Presidents.
