Message From the President

Dear College Community,

South Florida State College operates under an obligation to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students, employees, and the public.   The new Tobacco-Free College policy offers an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the wellness of our students, our employees, and the public. Consistent with our institutional vision, we are “Enriching our communities through education…one life at a time.” The SFSC Mission Statement reminds us to “believe in the worth of each of our students, and through all of our educational programs and services, we seek to develop human potential and to create brighter futures.” The college mission also affirms that we are “dedicated to providing a learning-centered environment.”

These institutional commitments justify the decision of the SFSC Board of Trustees to establish a Tobacco-Free College policy that assures clean air everywhere at our college.

Throughout history, humans have engaged, often unwittingly, in behaviors and practices that unnecessarily endangered their health and safety—often with unfortunate consequences. Once we recognize and understand the real and potential harm to individuals and societies, we chose to act on that knowledge. Creating a tobacco-free college represents our commitment to creating an optimal learning and working environment.

Thank you for your cooperation with this vital initiative.

Sincerely,

Norman L. Stephens Jr., President
