The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program provides American English language instruction to foreign-born US citizens and resident aliens who wish to communicate more effectively in English. South Florida State College (SFSC) serves students from various countries who collectively speak many different languages. Classes emphasize the fundamentals of grammar, conversational skills, listening comprehension, vocabulary, writing ability, and accent reduction. The ESOL program also exposes students to a variety of American customs and cultural traditions. Classes are offered for students at all levels. All students will be given the CASAS test on reading and listening to establish their English baseline.
Classes are offered during the morning, afternoon, and evening. Currently, ESOL classes are provided at all SFSC locations and several off-campus sites. ESOL classes at SFSC offer students, with beginning to advanced-level English language skills, the opportunity to learn job-related terminology through a series of classes. Students gain English ability through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Instructors are specialists in teaching English to ESOL students and use real-life situations in the classroom to make the most impact on student learning.
South Florida State College ESOL classes can help students:
- Develop the skills needed to find a job or get a promotion
- Prepare for college-level academic courses at SFSC
